It all starts with a lack of food.
Agriculture in Burkina Faso provides employment to more than 85% of the working population. It also contributes for 33% of the gross domestic product and accounts for more than 85% of export earnings (NRD, 2012). Cereals constitute the basis of the population nutrition and rice is the fourth cereal grown in Burkina in terms of area and production.
The consumption of rice in Burkina Faso is constantly increasing while national rice production covers only 47% of the population’s needs.
Paradoxically, Burkina Faso has a great unexploited area for rice growing. There is approximately 500,000 ha of developable lowlands of which less than 100 ha are now worked leaving more than 233,500 irrigable ha unused.
